Ukrainians gather to honor an artist killed defending the country

Ukrainians gathered in Kyiv on Monday to pay tribute to a slain artist who became a soldier, while Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Washington.

One of the most well-known modern artists in Ukraine, Davyd Chychkan, was killed last week while defending positions near Zaporizhzhia. He was 39.

The center of Kyiv was turned into a gallery of remembering when mourners displayed his canvases outdoors during his funeral at Independence Square. The gesture underscored the way Chychkan s life and work fused art with resistance.

Chychkan, who was born into a family of artists, made a name for himself with daring, politically charged paintings that embraced anarchist principles and questioned authority. Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture acknowledged his death, adding his name to the increasing list of cultural leaders slain since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. More than 200 authors, curators, and artists have been killed in the conflict, according to PEN Ukraine.

The burial for Chychkan served as a reminder that the cost of the battle is not only measured in terms of territory and casualties but also in terms of lost cultural assets, incomplete canvases, and hushed voices.

The contrast is stark: while leaders in Washington discuss the details of a potential peace agreement, including the issue of Ukrainian land in Kyiv, the cost of protecting that territory was being written down, sealed in blood, and painted in brushstrokes.
