The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has released the following news release.
A juvenile escape near 3100 East and 650 North in Menan was reported to Jefferson County Dispatch at 7:12 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. The 15-year-old male was last spotted heading south on 3100 East the previous evening while on a Canadian visit to the area.
A stolen pickup with a 16-foot ATV trailer attached was reported to dispatch at 7:37 a.m., about a mile away. The kid and car were reported to NCIC, the National Crime Information Center, and Jefferson County deputies kept searching the area.
The young person was found in Lincoln County, Wyoming, at 10:48 a.m., following an accident involving a stolen Volkswagen Jetta.
Deputies discovered that the young person had broken into a BMW shop in Afton, Wyoming, and taken a BMW after taking the pickup in Jefferson County. Later, that car was involved in an accident in Bear Lake County, Idaho. In Bear Lake County, Idaho, the young person stole the Volkswagen Jetta and fled. Deputies in Lincoln County, Wyoming, found him after he crashed the Jetta while traveling there.
The child is being detained in Wyoming’s Lincoln County. In Lincoln County, he faces felony charges of burglary, car theft, property destruction, and possession of stolen property. Grand theft charges from Jefferson and Bear Lake counties. An estimated $100,000 has been damaged.
The sixteen-foot ATV trailer has not yet been found. It was taken from the pickup between Afton, Wyoming, and Menan, Idaho. At the time of the theft, the trailer was devoid of license plates. Please call Jefferson County Dispatch at (208) 745-9210, option 7, if you can locate the trailer.
