Shelley, Idaho Following an encounter in southern Idaho, deputies shot and killed a suspect late Tuesday night, the Bingham and Bonneville County Sheriff’s Offices jointly released.
After hearing reports of gunfire, Bingham County deputies were sent to a location east of Shelley at approximately 11 p.m. on August 19. Dispatchers were informed by the reporting party that a homeowner had resisted a suspect who was trying to remove a four-wheeler from their property. Shots were fired during the incident, injuring the suspect as well as the homeowner. After then, the guy took off on foot.
When deputies arrived, they asked local law enforcement for help setting up a perimeter and conducting a search for the culprit. The attempt was joined by deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, the Shelley and Blackfoot police departments, and the Idaho State Police. The homeowner was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls by Shelley Fire and Ambulance staff after suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Deputies from Bonneville and Bingham counties found the suspect in a field close to the house while conducting a search. Deputies from both agencies fired shots. The suspect passed away at the scene despite the deputies’ efforts to save his life.
There were no injuries to law enforcement personnel. Bingham County Sheriff Jeff Gardner asked the East Idaho Critical Incident Team to investigate after the area was secured. With help from Idaho Falls Police and Idaho State Police, the Pocatello Police Department is spearheading the investigation.
