‘She was a great kid’: Man taken into custody for shooting death of 18-year-old daughter

CALDWELL, Idaho — Hope “Onyx” Cornish, 18, has been confirmed by authorities as the adolescent who was discovered dead inside a Caldwell house on Monday.
Cornish was discovered dead at the scene of a gunshot wound in a house on the 1600 block of Blaine Street, according to the Canyon County Coroner’s Office. Her preference to use the name Onyx was confirmed by her family to Idaho News 6 on Wednesday.
Hours after the shooting, Onyx’s adoptive father, 51-year-old Delbert Cornish, was taken into custody in Mountain Home, according to the police. Using Automated License Plate Reader cameras, officers followed his car and apprehended him without any problems.
Investigators claim that following an altercation with his father, Cornish’s teenage son fled the house and dialed 911. Officers discovered Onyx dead after clearing the house, and they also located a gun close by.

According to Onyx’s aunt, Debra Duran, she was a wonderful child. Simply put, 18 is too young to be taken. To assist the family with funeral costs, a GoFundMe page has been established; contributions can be made here.
In a news release, Canyon County Coroner Jennifer Crawford expressed her condolences to the family and loved ones impacted by this tragic loss.
In connection with Onyx’s death, Delbert Cornish, who faces charges of both murder and aggravated assault, made an appearance in Canyon County court on Wednesday. He will be detained without bond until his next court session, which is set for 8:30 a.m. on September 3.
The Caldwell Police Department is still investigating the case. The most recent information will be provided by Idaho News 6 as it becomes available.
