Senators slam Meta over AI rules reportedly allowing ‘romantic’ chats with kids

Following a Reuters article that claimed Meta’s artificial intelligence was permitted to have romantic or sensual interactions with a youngster, two U.S. senators—one a Democrat and the other a Republican—are denouncing the firm.
According to Reuters, the policy was described in an internal Meta document. According to the news agency, the contract also allowed the chatbots to produce inaccurate medical information and make racially biased claims.
After receiving inquiries from the site earlier this month, Meta reportedly verified the document’s authenticity and stated that it has deleted the parts that permitted chatbots to interact romantically with youngsters.
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., responded to the report by urging Congress to take action.

Hawley stated on X that Meta only retracted parts of its corporate document that approved of “chatbots flirting and engaging in romantic roleplay with children” after being caught. “This warrants a prompt congressional investigation.”
The corporation was also denounced by Sen. Brian Schatz, a Democrat from Hawaii.
He declared, “This is disgusting and evil,” on X. “When someone mentioned this concept aloud, I don’t understand how any parent could have done anything but freak out. Knowing that this was approved by several people is making my head explode.”
According to Reuters, Meta’s chief ethicist as well as members of its engineering, legal, and public policy teams accepted the recommendations. The business told Reuters that it is updating the agreement and that such discussions with minors should never have been permitted.
