The Swan Valley In Swan Valley, a section of Bear Creek Road may soon reopen after being blocked since 2023 due to a landslide.
Bonneville County commissioners just approved a contract with the U.S. Forest Service to fix it, according to a news release sent to EastIdahoNews.com Wednesday afternoon. The project is expected to cost $1 million in total. As per the deal, Bonneville County will receive up to $825,000 in payment from the Forest Service for the slide area’s repairs.
In July, construction bids will be placed.
The Calamity Campground, the day use area, the boat ramp, and a number of summer home dwellings are all accessible via Bear Creek Road. Due to soil erosion caused by snowmelt runoff, a section of the Bonneville County road between Snake River Road and Calamity Road by Palisades Reservoir was closed to traffic in May 2023. The Forest Service said in a press release at the time that it led to the collapse of one lane and the undercutting of parts of the remaining asphalt road.

Recreation at Calamity Boat Landing, Campground, summer houses, cabins, and Snake River Boat Club has been restricted since the closure. According to a release from Bonneville County commissioners, access throughout this shutdown has been via a two-track dirt road that is off-limits to trailers and larger vehicles.
Regular traffic access will be restored after repairs. The project’s completion date is uncertain.
