Nez Perce Tribal Police Chief Appointed to National Law Enforcement Board

Mark Bensen, the chief of the Nez Perce Tribal Police, has been appointed as a Member-at-Large on the Small & Rural Law Enforcement Executives Association’s (SRLEEA) 2025–2026 Board of Governors.

Speaking for over 90% of law enforcement agencies in the US, the majority of which serve small towns, rural counties, and tribal areas, Chief Bensen said it is an honor to represent rural and tribal agencies nationally.

According to Bensen, this Board strives to guarantee that our communities have the tools, instruction, and assistance required to maintain the safety of both officers and the general public. I’m excited to promote the special requirements of tribal and rural policing at all governmental levels.

Following the deaths of Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada in Tremonton, Utah, the announcement was made amid a challenging week for the law enforcement community. A K-9 companion and a deputy were injured, and both were killed while performing their duties. Bensen offered their families, fellow police, and the community his sympathies and support.

The goal of SRLEEA is to give small, rural, and tribal law enforcement leaders a united voice, advocacy, and training. The organization also prioritizes resolving resource shortages, enhancing collaborations, and making sure regional organizations are represented in national public safety debates.

Chief Bensen underlined that in addition to representing the Nez Perce Tribal Police Department, his position on the Board will uphold the department’s devotion, bravery, and integrity in protecting and serving the people.
