Alexander Mattison, a running back for the Miami Dolphins, will miss the whole 2025 season due to neck surgery he had in Chicago.
In the fourth quarter of a 24–25 preseason matchup with the Chicago Bears, Mattison was tackled by defensive back Alex Cook, and his helmet struck the ground, causing the neck injury. In Sunday’s preseason opener at Soldier Field, he had three carries for eight yards, including a one-yard touchdown run. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Mattison was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where the emergency operation was performed right after the game. It is anticipated that he will fully recover.
After signing a one-year contract with the Dolphins this summer, Mattison, a six-year veteran, was scheduled to start his debut season with the organization. He played for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. Mattison was listed by the Dolphins as their third-string running back, behind Jaylen Wright and De Von Achane. The only other running back on the team’s roster was Ollie Gordon II. In Mattison’s absence, the Dolphins have already added veteran Aaron Shampklin to their running back depth.
Before hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars in their preseason finale on August 23 in Miami Gardens, Florida, the Dolphins will play their second preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday at 1 p.m. EDT in Detroit.
