BOISE, ID With the start of the new school year, drivers in Idaho are paying extra at the pump. AAA reports that the average price of a gallon of normal gasoline in the state is $3.53, which is eight cents less than it was at this time last year but six cents more than it was last week and last month.
Gas prices have been gradually declining nationwide, averaging $3.14 a gallon, which is roughly 30 cents less than a year ago and a penny and a half less than a week ago. California has the highest fuel prices in the US, at $4.50 per gallon, while Idaho comes in ninth.
While weekday traffic may drop as families adjust to school routines, weekend travel may still result in pricing swings, according to Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. According to Conde, there might be a teeter-totter effect on pump prices, which seems like a good way to start the school year.
The price of crude oil has decreased since it hit $70 per barrel at the end of July. At the moment, West Texas Intermediate is selling close to $64 per barrel, down $4 from the previous month and $2 from the previous week. Conde predicted that Labor Day might mark the next significant shift in price alleviation.
The average city in Idaho as of August 11, 2025, is as follows:
- Boise $3.60
- Coeur d Alene $3.36
- Franklin $3.39
- Idaho Falls $3.44
- Lewiston $3.38
- Pocatello $3.51
- Rexburg $3.50
- Twin Falls $3.55
