Winchester, Idaho Winchester Lake’s health advisory is still in force because harmful algal blooms (HABs) continue to endanger human health.
The Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Division and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) strongly advise the public to stay away from the water. Toxins found in the dangerous blooms can endanger humans, animals, and pets.
The caution, which was first issued on July 10, 2025, is still in effect since cyanobacteria that produce toxins are still being found in the water. Those who consume or come into touch with tainted water may experience a variety of symptoms due to the cyanotoxins they produce. Skin rashes, stomachaches, diarrhea, and more severe consequences like liver damage are all possible health hazards.
The public is advised by DHW to:
-
Refrain from swimming, wading, and any other activity that puts you in touch with the lake.
-
Livestock and pets should not be near water, and any exposed skin or fur should be washed right away with clean water.
-
Don’t use lake water for cooking or drinking. The poisons are not eliminated by boiling or filtering the water.
-
Take care while eating fish that has been caught in the lake, and wash your hands well after handling any water-borne items.
-
Keep an eye out for any symptoms of disease and, if required, seek medical help.
