(CNN) A source with firsthand knowledge of the penalty says the fan who made a disparaging comment about Arizona Diamondbacks player Ketel Marte’s late mother during Tuesday’s game has been barred from all Major League ballparks for an indeterminate period of time.
During his team’s triumph over the White Sox in Chicago, Marte was clearly unhappy by the remark.
After the situation occurred during Marte’s seventh-inning at-bat, shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and manager Torey Lovullo comforted him.
The fan reportedly mentioned Marte’s mother, who died in a vehicle accident in 2017, according to MLB.com.
After the game, Lovullo told reporters, “It was a terrible moment.” Sometimes supporters go too far, and they may be unpleasant. I will defend my players because I adore them. Over the nine years I’ve known Ketel, he’s had some very amazing times. There have also been some difficulties, and I am aware of some extremely trying times in his life.
We are ultimately human, and as such, we have feelings. I wanted to shield him since I could see he was in pain.
The Arizona Republic stated that Marte refused to comment on the matter, while a White Sox representative informed CNN that the fan was removed from the game and has been barred from Rate Field.
After the incident, the league praised the White Sox for acting quickly to remove the supporter.
Arizona defeated the White Sox 4-1, their second straight victory, thanks to a single home run by Marte in the first inning.
Lovullo claimed to have comforted the second baseman by telling Marte, “I love you, I’m with you, and we’re all together, you’re not alone.” That guy is a moron and shouldn’t influence you, regardless of what occurs, what was said, or what you heard.
ESPN reports that following the game, Perdomo expressed his anger about the event and demanded that the fan be prohibited from going to any more games.
Fans at Rate Field gave Marte a round of applause when he went up to the batter’s box during Wednesday’s rematch between the two teams.
“Basketball is Family” was the message that was shown on the home video board. Ketel Marte is supported by the White Sox community.
