Chukars fall in finale, suffer first series loss of season

IDAHO GOES DOWN For the first time this season, the Idaho Falls Chukars have lost a series.

At Melaleuca Field, the Chukars (19-10) suffered a lopsided defeat on Sunday after crushing the Ogden Raptors (15-15) on Saturday. With a chance to earn a series split, Idaho Falls, which is still plagued by injuries, lost 21-8.

Due to the Chukars’ lack of rotation, opener Austyn Coleman (L, 0-2) made another start but left after three innings of work with his team behind 4-3 despite taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The Raptors continued to put pressure on almost every player in the Idaho Falls bullpen. Luke Hempel was the lone pitcher without a run allowed out of the seven that took the hill for the home club, including second baseman Garret Ostrander, who worked the ninth.

The Chukars only managed seven hits on the day, unable to get their bats to do anything as the Ogden offense was seemingly circling the bases all afternoon.

In a losing attempt, Gabriel Vasquez (5), Simon Baumgardt (7), and Benjamin Rosengard (5) all hit home runs. No other Chukar took to the road.

Before returning to work in Grand Junction on Tuesday to begin a seven-game set against the Jackalopes, the Chukars will take Monday off to recover.
