The news release from Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 is as follows.
POCATELLO Yellow school buses will once again be a common sight on our highways as the back-to-school season draws near.
On August 27, Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 will start its academic year. It is requesting your assistance in safeguarding the neighborhood and reminding the public of the significance of school bus safety.
Why it matters
Hundreds of students in our community depend on school buses each day to get safely to and from school. However, every year, vehicles who do not stop while the stop arm is extended and the school bus lights are flashing endanger children.
What the law says
Unless a divided highway divides the route, all traffic in both directions must stop when a school bus stops, flashes its red lights, and extends its stop arm. The purpose of this law is to safeguard students while they are getting on and off the bus.
Key safety reminders for drivers:
- Stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm.
- Slow down in school zones and watch for children walking or biking.
- Be extra alert during early morning and afternoon hours.
- Never pass a school bus that is loading or unloading children.
