According to a news release from the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the vicinity of 1100 East and 1300 North east of Shelley at approximately 11 p.m. on Tuesday following a report of gunfire.
According to the reporting party, a homeowner discovered Sessions, who was later identified as the individual, attempting to steal a four-wheeler from their property. Shots were fired during the altercation, wounding Sessions and the homeowner before Sessions fled the residence.
After being dispatched to the scene, Shelley Fire and Ambulance officials took the injured homeowner to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls so that they could receive care for their gunshot wound.
When deputies got there, they started searching for Sessions, who was thought to be hurt but still carrying a gun.
He was eventually located in a field adjacent to the property by deputies from Bingham and Bonneville County, and both agencies’ deputies fired shots. Whether Sessions fired at deputies is unknown.
He passed away at the site despite the deputies’ quick attempts to save his life.
The East Idaho Critical Incident Team was called in by Bingham County Sheriff Jeff Gardner to conduct the investigation. The homeowner’s injuries were not life-threatening, and neither deputies nor law enforcement were hurt during the event.
According to the release, no further information is yet available as the East Idaho Critical Incident Team is continuing to investigate with the Pocatello Police Department as the lead agency, assisted by resources from Idaho Falls Police and the Idaho State Police.
As the investigation progresses, the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office says further details will be made public later.
