Instagram’s new ‘Friend Map’ feature leads to privacy concerns from users

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has revealed three new updates for the company’s billions of users. Among these is the “Friend Map,” which lets users follow one another around.
“This is an opt-in experience, but if you want, you can share your location with Close Friends list or custom list of people that you care about and trust most,” Mosseri stated on Instagram.”When they go to the map, which you can get to from the top of inbox, they will see the location of people who decided to share location with them.”
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Teens are being automatically placed in more limited, private profiles on Instagram.
The location will immediately appear on the map if you upload a picture or video along with it. All users begin with their location off, Mosseri explained on Thursday.
Check your messages to make sure it’s off. “Map,” which looks like the picture below, should appear at the top. Click “Map” first, followed by the gear icon in the upper right corner. You might need to upgrade your Instagram app if this isn’t shown in the Messages page.
You can choose to let some friends or all of your followers to see where you are. My conversations with Instagram users revealed a range of viewpoints.
Logan Schwock, 17, stated, “I don’t really care if people know where I am because it doesn’t matter to me that much.”
Jenna Keller declared, “I’m going to turn it off, and I didn’t know about it.”
