According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the San Diego Padres made a stunning trade deadline acquisition of left-handed starting pitcher JP Sears and reliever Mason Miller from the Oakland Athletics.
In exchange for Sears and Miller, the Padres sent right-handed pitchers Henry Baez, Braden Nett, and Eduarniel Nunez to the Athletics, along with shortstop Leo De Vries, the third-ranked baseball prospect.
The Athletics posted: The team said today that it has traded right-handed pitchers Mason Miller and JP Sears to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitchers Henry Baez, Braden Nett, and Eduarniel Nez, as well as shortstop Leo De Vries.
Miller, who is 26 years old, was named an MLB All-Star for the Athletics in 2024. In 38 games so far this season, he has a 3.76 ERA, 59 strikeouts, 18 walks, and 20 saves in 38 1/3 innings thrown. With a lifetime 3.16 ERA and 48 saves during his first three seasons, the three-year veteran finished 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA and 28 saves in 55 appearances last season.
The 29-year-old Sears was originally traded from the New York Yankees to the Athletics in 2022. In his first 22 starts this season, he went 7-9 with a 4.95 ERA, and in his first 103 career appearances, he went 29-39 with a 4.48 ERA.
In his first 157 minor league games, 18-year-old De Vries hit.241 with 19 home runs, 84 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases.
The 23-year-old Nett made 17 starts for the Double-A San Antonio Missions this season and finished 5-4 with a 3.39 ERA. He made his first 54 minor league appearances, going 12-8 with a 3.79 ERA.
The 22-year-old Baez made 20 starts for the Missions this season and went 4-2 with a 1.96 ERA. During his first 88 minor league outings, he went 19-15 with a 3.13 ERA.
Nunez, 26, had four appearances with the Padres in season and went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA. During his first 219 minor league games, he went 25-23 with a 3.89 ERA.
