Spokane, Washington After allegedly exposing himself and acting strangely on a Spokane Transit Authority (STA) bus, a 40-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning following a heated altercation with deputies at the Hastings Park and Ride on North Mayfair Road.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reports that on July 29, at approximately 9:35 a.m., deputies were called to a report of a male who refused to get off the bus, removing his pants and exposing his genitalia. According to reports, the suspect, David V. Wyman, seemed to be experiencing a mental crisis and was under the effect of an unidentified narcotic.

Wyman, who was allegedly standing close to the driver’s area and having hallucinations about rattlesnakes, was the only one on the bus when deputies arrived. According to officials, Wyman was perspiring heavily and showing symptoms of what may be excited delirium, a disorder that can cause dangerously elevated body temperatures and erratic behavior.

Wyman originally seemed to comply with a deputy’s attempt to detain him peacefully, but he abruptly resisted, balled his fists, and pulled away. There was a struggle that spilled into the ground outside the bus’s front. Wyman kept kicking, resisting, and talking incoherently, so more deputies came to help subdue him.

Before Wyman was taken to a nearby hospital, medical staff put him under sedation and used ice packs to assist lower his body temperature. He was charged with third-degree assault, resisting arrest, two counts of indecent exposure, and unauthorized transit conduct after receiving a medical clearance and being lodged into the Spokane County Jail.

During the event, one deputy was slightly hurt. No STA riders or staff were hurt, however some had blood on them or their equipment was broken. For additional assessment, the case has been forwarded to mental health specialists.
