Misdemeanor Case Against WSU Student Accused Of Assaulting Student Over Pro-Trump Hat Resolved

Pullman, Washington A Washington State University student who was charged with punching another student for donning a pro-Trump hat has had his misdemeanor case dismissed.

In Whitman County District Court in Pullman, 24-year-old Gerald Hoff’s 4th degree assault case has been resolved with a misdemeanor settlement. State law states that this agreement can be made if the victim certifies that they have been compensated for their harm. By dismissing the allegation, the agreement settles the issue. Pro Tem Judge Doug Robinson presided over the court on Thursday when the misdemeanor compromise was reached.

Late in the evening of February 28th, Pullman Police arrived at the scene of the altercation. Jay Sani, a 25-year-old student at WSU, was strolling down Colorado Street sporting a Take America Back cap. Patrick Mahoney, a former PhD student at WSU’s School of Politics, is accused of grabbing Sani’s hat and throwing it into the street. Then Sani hurled food at Mahoney. According to reports, Hoff and Mahoney retaliated by throwing Sani to the ground.

Mahoney’s case is still continuing, and his next court appearance is set for August 21. He was dismissed from his position as a WSU instructor. Hoff lost his hourly position at WSU. The WSU website still shows both guys as students. Sani is no longer identified as a WSU student.
