ACHD wins $18.4 million grant for Boise Bench roadway improvements

Idaho’s Boise Bench A $18.4 million federal grant awarded to the Ada County Highway District (ACHD) will shortly result in major road upgrades in the Boise Bench area.

The money, the biggest grant ACHD has ever received, will go toward the “Build the Boise Bench” project, which aims to upgrade the local parks and schools’ infrastructure.

Stihles Clark, Senior Project Manager at ACHD, stated, “I am aware that our application team has been working on this grant for approximately more than a year.”

Areas along the Boise Bench that presently lack specific infrastructure will be the focus of the U.S. Department of Transportation award.

Watch as four road segments along the Boise Bench undergo modifications.

The intersection of Franklin Road and Allumbaugh Street on the Boise Bench is one of four places planned for development.

“This segment on Franklin road, there’s a couple schools and a couple parks,” Clark stated. “Kinda hard to see, but there are walking trails currently that people are using, so just trying to increase safety on this segment.”

Residents can anticipate a complete road renovation in other areas, such as Allumbaugh Street.

“Involves redoing the roadway, installing curb gutters, sidewalks, and green stormwater infrastructure,” Clark explained.

The highway district will have to overcome a number of obstacles in the repair process.

Clark said, “There’s a lot of design constraints with all of these projects,” “The railroads I described have two very massive petroleum lines that go beneath the road. It will be challenging to get all of these entities to work together on such a short timeline.

During the construction phase, there may be some disruptions for the residents of the Boise Bench area.

“Due to the project’s scale, there will be delays and detours throughout construction. The idea is to get in and out, hopefully,” Clark stated.

ACHD intends to consult with the community to gather more feedback prior to construction starting.

“We are planning to take these projects back out to the public in 2026 for an additional round of feedback,” Clark stated.

The majority of the construction is anticipated to occur in 2028 and 2029, and ACHD is presently in the design phase.
