WYOMING, MOOSE After paddleboarding in a storm on Wednesday, a guy reportedly drowned in Jackson Lake.

A 30-year-old man from El Paso, Texas, drowned close to Swim Beach in the Colter Bay region of Grand Teton National Park, according to a news release from the park.

Around 5:00 p.m., Teton Interagency Dispatch got a 911 call indicating that someone was in trouble in the lake, prompting the response of Rangers. When the rangers arrived, CPR had already begun, and they kept it going for about an hour. Regretfully, attempts at resuscitation failed.

Strong winds and waves were produced by a storm that passed across the area while the man was apparently stand-up paddleboarding. He lost contact with his paddleboard and was not wearing a life jacket.

According to the announcement, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks associated with open water recreation in mountainous areas.

Park rangers advise all guests to:

  • Always wear a life jacket, regardless of your swimming ability.
  • Be prepared for cold water temperatures, even in summer.
  • Keep a close eye on the weather. Conditions can change quickly in the mountains.

According to Grand Teton National Park, no further details are currently available and the event is still being investigated.
