Utah’s HYRUM (KSL.com) Early on Sunday, a man opened fire on sheriff’s deputies, sparking an hours-long SWAT standoff and rumors of potential explosives within the house.

When deputies declared the location secure at around 11:30 a.m., the event came to a conclusion. Two deaths were later confirmed by police, but no other information was given.

Two of our people have passed away. Nobody is out there. Late Sunday afternoon, Cache County Sheriff Lt. Mikelshan Bartschi stated, “We won’t have any more information for a while.”

According to Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen, a 45-year-old man called authorities and claimed to have killed his wife, prompting deputies to arrive at the Valley View Mobile Home Park, located at 560 Valley View Drive, in Hyrum at around five in the morning.

The man started shooting as the deputies got there, so they had to hide and bring in the sheriff’s SWAT team. According to Jensen, as the gunfight intensified, the shooter opened fire on SWAT police once more, who retaliated. To keep the scene under control, Logan, Brigham City, and Ogden police departments sent out armored vehicles.

According to a statement from Jensen, the suspect supplied images of his bomb vest and what looked to be explosives inside the residence when negotiations teams reached out to him.

Deputies reported at 10 a.m. that they had not spoken to the man for several hours and that police were trying to look inside the residence by clearing windows with armored vehicles. The public was warned by the sheriff’s office to avoid the area around Main Street, 400 West, and 100 South in Hyrum. Neighboring communities were evacuated.

However, the sheriff declared the area secure, withdrew the evacuation orders, and handed the investigation over to the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team shortly after 11:30 a.m. There were no additional information given regarding the deputies’ findings inside the house or how the matter was settled.

Given that a bullet went through a wall close to his uncle, neighbor David Mares attributed his family’s safety to divine intervention.

He remarked, “I’m really happy that I made it and that my entire family made it safe.”

Neighbors said that the guy and his wife were the two individuals killed, but authorities did not identify them.

We’ll be updating this story.
