Fundraising with flamboyance: Why flamingos are appearing at local businesses

IDAHO GOES DOWN Since Monday, a flock of flamingos known as a “flamboyance” has begun to show up outside local shops in an effort to generate money for a charitable organization in the area.

Flamingo Flocking is the name of Developmental Workshop Inc.’s fundraising event. Companies who have plastic flamingos on their property can either pay a ransom to have the birds removed or send them to another company of their choosing.

Businesses can also purchase services that involve branding their companies when the birds are transported to their new location, according to DWI’s website. Additionally, if you want to keep birds from landing outside, you can acquire flocking insurance.

“The flamingos came about as a way to help raise interest in the nonprofit’s golf tournament fundraiser in August,” Glenn Guzman, DWI’s sales and marketing manager, told EastIdahoNews.com.

He claimed that although he had never heard of it, Monday was National Pink Flamingo Day when DWI started to extinguish the flamingos.

According to Guzman, no one realized that these items somehow aligned. Although we intended it to raise awareness of the golf competition, it is become a world unto itself.

The three companies that have received the most attention thus far are BBSI, Tobin Restoration, and the Bank of Commerce.

According to Guzman, the money will be used to support DWI and its initiatives through the DWI Foundation, which was founded in the 1990s.

According to him, DWI was established in the early 1970s when people banded together to establish the nonprofit organization in order to assist those with special needs or disabilities in the neighborhood.

To assist these community members in become more self-sufficient, obtaining jobs in the area, learning new skills, and having things to do all day, DWI provides vocational training.

Since they are aware that future government funding cuts may affect them, Guzman said the flamingo flocking is a method for them to come up with new ways to earn money, with the assistance of its foundation.

Guzman stated, “We look forward to being out there a little bit more with other businesses and we appreciate the support, especially from the businesses that have flocked.”

On August 7, DWI’s Foundation Golf Tournament will be held at Sage Lakes Golf Courses. Guzman stated that in order to continue raising money and promoting the competition, the Flamingo Flocking will carry on for a few more weeks.
