Middle East escalations bring rising gas prices

The news release from AAA Idaho is as follows.

BOISE Your neighborhood gas station is feeling the effects of the growing tensions in the Middle East. AAA reports that the average price of a gallon of normal gasoline in Idaho is $3.38 today, which is around 19 cents less than a year ago but nine cents more than a week ago and seven cents more than a month ago.

The current national average is $3.22, which is 23 cents less than it was a year ago but eight cents more than it was a week ago and two cents more than it was a month ago.

“The margin is narrowing, but we’re still doing better than we were a year ago,” says Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. We run the danger of witnessing higher crude oil prices whenever geopolitical tensions cause the market to jitter. When you combine that with the start of summer travel, you have a two-pronged attack that is raising gas costs.

The benchmark for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is currently trading close to $70 a barrel, which is roughly $8 higher than it was a month ago. costs have eased somewhat today after hitting $74 per barrel late last week, but gas costs may rise if the price of oil increases as a result of problems with the global supply chain or more hostilities in the Middle East.

After California ($4.66), Hawaii ($4.48), Washington ($4.44), Oregon ($4.07), Nevada ($3.82), Alaska ($3.73), and Illinois ($3.43), Idaho is now the eighth most expensive state in the nation for petrol.
